Jim Cox, owner of Jim Cox Designs, started his building design business in early 1985 after ten years in the homebuilding industry both in New Mexico and Texas. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, Jim brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to his business after his experience working for prominent homebuilders in both states, heading the purchasing and estimating department, a panelization plant and the design department.
Since 1985, our firm has designed thousands of homes for both custom and volume builders and custom clients. Our portfolio includes custom homes ranging from 500 to 14,000 square feet, and spec homes designed for both volume and semi-custom builders throughout South Texas. While the majority of our designs have been built in San Antonio, our designs can be found in Houston, Austin, Dallas, New Braunfels, McAllen and other Texas cities and as far afield as Washington, Colorado and North Carolina. Additionally, we have designed multi-family units such as condominiums and duplexes, and light commercial projects which include a Holiday Inn Express, dental offices, an equine clinic, office buildings, strip centers, gated community entrances and recreation centers. Another area of expertise is extensive remodel and renovation plans and additions to existing homes.
Our mission is to provide design based on our clients’ needs. Over the last quarter century, architectural styles have changed, come and gone, or adjusted to current trends. We keep our skills sharpened by attending homebuilding and design trade shows around the country and taking continuing education courses offered as well.
Our architectural and design staff provide services that run the gamut from full custom drawings to builder-type brochures. Other areas of expertise include full custom site specific plans as well as product lines for volume builders and convertible plans for semi-custom builders. And we offer consultation to builders for product line development. For builders in communities that require them, energy calculations are also available.
Our staff includes Ronda Ottmers, a graduate of the Texas A & M School of Architecture, an employee since 1994. She is an invaluable asset to the company, with accuracy and speed her specialty. Chris Pena, Jr. is a graduate of ITT and a valued employee since 1998. Both are skilled CAD operators with enormous talent.
Sara Cox, wife of Jim Cox, handles marketing and business development as well as financial operations. Sara has worked alongside Jim since the inception of the company. Her background includes experience working in homebuilding, the title business as an escrow officer, and as a realtor.
